Truth and Reconciliation

Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

At Health Promotion Ontario (HPO), diversity and inclusion are foundational principles. We recognize and celebrate the rich cultural heritage and diversity of Ontario's communities, including those of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Our commitment to diversity is symbolized in our logo, which reflects the mosaic of cultures and identities across the province.

Calls to Action

HPO values and actively advocates for the 94 Calls to Action identified by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. This includes advocating for Calls that are explicitly about health (18-24 and 55) and supporting Calls that address the social and ecological determinants of health. We are dedicated to working collaboratively with Indigenous communities to achieve meaningful reconciliation and promote health equity for all.

Autonomy and Distinctions-Based Approach

HPO acknowledges and respects the unique distinctions between and within First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities. We honour the autonomy of Indigenous peoples and recognize that cultural practices, traditions, and lands are integral to their health and well-being. By embracing a distinctions-based approach, we strive to uphold Indigenous rights and support community-led initiatives that enhance health outcomes and preserve cultural heritage.

Individual and Collective Needs

HPO is committed to recognizing and upholding the individual and collective rights of Indigenous “peoples” to self-determination and the highest attainable standard of mental and physical well-being. We advocate for holistic approaches that encompass the protection and promotion of health, safety, and well-being within First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities.
